Audacity2.1.2 Arabic translation notes

Riyadh Talal
Hello,
This is Riyadh from Iraq.
I want to participate in Audacity translation into Arabic.

Thank you for this neat right-to-left design.

I have the following notes about .po file and Audacity interface. I hope someone will look into these notes and make sure I did not make a mistake:

1. Missing phrases in .po file:
Edit>Preferences>Tracks>Default View Mode > Spectogram is missing
Edit>Preferences>Tracks>Spectograms> Window type > Except Rectangular, the options are missing
Edit>Preferences>Effects : Effects types are missing
Generate> Missing: Click Track, Nonbandlimited..., Pluck, Risset Drum, Sine + cosine oscillator
Effects> Missing too many effects
Analyze> Missing: Beat Finder, Regular Interval Lables, Sample Data Export, Silence Finder, Sound Finder

2. Word order
Edit>Preferences>Keyboard : items are kept in English worder order. So, when translated into Arabic, with present unchangeable
word order, they mean: Menu File, Menu Edit, Menu Preview, etc...

3. In Arabic interface, several things are mirrored (right is left, left is right):
a- Audacity logo when program starts
b- Track Control Panel : everything is mirrored
  c- Timeline: numbers are mirrored
d- Selection Toolbar: numbers are mirrored
e- Time lables and time counts:
    - time counts are mirrored (example: 12 is shown 21)
    - seconds label (shown right in Arabic) has the count of hours; and hours label (shown left in Arabic) has the count of seconds
    - Time lables and time counts have little interference (For example, in Audacity Timer Recorder or Selection Toolbar). Making one-letter translation made only m(minutes) and h(hours) better.
  f- Lables

4. Drop down menues are invisible only when changing interface into Arabic.

5. When changing the size of toolbars by click-drag, direction is inverted: dragging outward would shrink the toolbar, dragging inward would enlarge it.

I have attached screenshots (if it is allowed).

Fwd: Audacity2.1.2 Arabic translation notes

James Crook
CC'ing Audacity Devel (developers list).

Riyadh,

Thank You!  I had no idea that this is how the interface looks in Arabic!

Unfortunately to get this right means a lot of development work for Audacity, and it is unlikely to happen unless some of the developers are keen to take it on.  The current mirroring and RightToLeft design is being done 'for us' by the tools we use, and that is why the numbers and Audacity splash screen are coming out backwards.

If we take this on, we will need a lot of help with knowing what to do.  Can I ask some questions?

  • Should the recording meters grow from right to left?  i.e. loud values (red and orange) to the left?
  • Should the green arrow for recording point the other way?
  • Do all the sliders slide in the right direction?
  • Are the effects dialogs OK, or do they have some mirrored text too?.

I think our best plan is to put a new configuration option in, called "Right To Left Order", and we can maybe clear up the worst of the problems by using it.  This option will be set by hand for the time being, in preferences.  Later we will automatically set it from the language.

This could take many steps over a long time back and forth to get right.  We would need to send you new versions for you to try, which we think may be better than the previous ones.  We might move quite slowly, because we are volunteers doing this in our spare time.  Are you OK with that and willing and able to help?

Some of the missing strings are missing in all languages, because they come from plugins.
We should try and do something about that at least for the plugins that we ship with Audacity, as that will benefit all languages.

I hope we do take this on, and address the biggest problems soon.

Again thanks for contacting us and the clear detailed feedback.

--James.

Re: Fwd: Audacity2.1.2 Arabic translation notes

Riyadh Talal
Hello James,

Thank you very much for taking the time to think about this.

For your questions:

1- Yes, recording meters should grow from right to left (I did not give attention to this, thank you).
- Besides, now recording (and playing) level meters start red and grow yellow, then green.
- In yellow area, they also show MIRRORED western Arabic numers (expected is: eastern Arabic numbers 'or Hindi'), while they are
mixed with the ordinary eastern Arabic numbers in the background of the meter.
- In red area, I see UN-MIRRORED, but only western Arabic numers, alone: NOT mixed with the background of the meter.

2- Sorry, I did not find recording arrow. If you mean the green play/loop play arrow in Transport Toolbar and the green arrow for play-
at-speed, then yes. Those should point the other way (to strat with audio start and point to its progress direction).
Indeed, other items that have direction in Transport Toolbar need point the other way: Skip to Start and Skip to End.

3- Sliders seem to slide in the right direction. They slide as expected: right is minimum value and they grow to left. I tested several of
them.

4- All text in effects seem to be OK. I tested I tested several of them.

I think any option, as the "Right To Left Order", would be a good start.
Of course it is OK to send me material for test. I'll do what I can to help in this.

Just to add, the Preferences themselves seem to be quite broken on Windows.

The following panes do not show any (or some of) their editable controls in Hebrew
