Bug Scanning VST on initial startup

Gary Bauer

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit,  4Gb RAM, Intel Core 2  @ 2GHz

New installation of 1.3.11.

Scanning for VST files hangs after 5 – 6 seconds and does not proceed or allow Audacity to complete launch.

Workaround – catch the scanning and cancel before it hangs.  Since the scanning window “hides” behind other open windows, everything must be minimized before attempting to start Audacity or you’ll miss the 5 second window.

Regards,

Gary

Stevethefiddle
Do you have any VST's installed?
Does this happen with other versions of Audacity? (which versions?)

No VSTs installed.

This did not happen with 1.3.9 or any earlier beta versions.

It appeared to 'hang' while scanning my Acronis backup software program file directory

Can you make sure you have no VST plug-ins installed in
any of these locations where Audacity looks:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=VST_Plug-ins#locations

It's possible you may have installed VSTs with some other
program.

Can you attach your plugins.cfg file which should be in:
Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Audacity

Exiting Audacity and changing the plugins.cfg contents to
just:

[VST]
[VST/0]

might help.

What is the path to your Acronis directory? Is it somehow in
one of the directories or paths where Audacity looks for VST
plug-ins?

Hi Gale,

No reference VSTPlugIn in registry.

No plugins.cfg file in Users...Audacity

The only place Acronis shows up is in Programs(x86) - it is not listed in the Users...path

Sorry - that's not much to go on.

What is it that tells you it hangs in this directory? I'm not very
familiar with VST loading, just curious how you know.

There is a known issue on Windows that if you have no VST Plug-ins in
locations Audacity looks for them, a scanning dialogue will always
appear when you launch the program.  As far as I know, the scan should
only appear the first time in a fresh install, until you ask for a rescan
by going to the Effects tab of Preferences.

The scan doesn't as far as we know usually cause a problem, and normally
completes quickly. Typically it would flash by and appear to be scanning
the dll's in the Plug-Ins folder in the Audacity installation directory.

Have you ever tried just waiting and seeing if the progress bars on the
scan do complete, even if it takes a few minutes? If the progress bars
hang, do ALT + PrtScr. That will capture an image of what is hanging.

It might also be useful if you could list all the dll's on your hard drive.
To do this, go to Windows Start and type "cmd" (without quotes). Then
in the command window, type:

   dir c:\ /s /b | find "dll" > ..\list.txt

That should list all the dll's on your C:\ drive, in "list.txt" in the
folder the command prompt opened into. If you do that, please send
me the file privately.

You may not be able to see plugins.cfg because it's hidden. To show
hidden files and folders, follow these steps:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial151.html

Then to get Audacity going again, exit or force quit it, navigate to:

Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Audacity

and copy the attached audacity.cfg to that folder. Say "yes" if you
are asked if you want to overwrite audacity.cfg. That tells Audacity
not to scan for plugins. That may not stop the scanning, but I'd be
interested to know if it does. If it doesn't stop the scanning, force
quit Audacity again and copy the attached plugins.cfg to the same
folder above (overwriting if necessary). I think that should tell
Audacity it has scanned and found no plug-ins.
