No LAME on Mac for Guest and Standard accounts - workaround

Peter Sampson-2
For Mac machines like my Macbook and Cliff's machine that don't suffer the
full vicissitudes of Bug #1567 - but may still be unable to load/access the LAME
library (like my Guest and Test, standard, accounts) there is a simple and
straightforward workaround for creating MP3s.

1) Export a .wav file from Audacity to say desktop (or Documents)
2) Launch iTunes
3) iTunes>Preferences - on the "General" tab use "Import Settings" to set "
    MP3 Encoder" and required quality
4) Drag the .wav file into iTunes
5) select the file and use File>Convert>MP3 Version
6) drag the .mp3 file to the desktop (or Documents) ready for use.

Note that iTunes is installed ny default on Macs and is available readily
for both Guest and standard, non-privileged, accounts so no installation
is required.

This works really well for Guest account in particular as on logging in and
launching iTunes the library will be empty.  And when logging out the contents
of the iTunes library will be automatically deleted.

The standard, non-privileged, user with a pre-existing iTunes library would need
to clean up their iTunes library removing the temporary work files (if required).

This relates directly to the methods that we advocate in the Manual:
2) as the primary method in the workflow tutorial (which is basically my workflow)
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/sample_workflow_for_exporting_to_itunes.html

So not even really a "workaround" - lust one of our proposed modus operandi.

I do note that even without the LAME library I can drag an .mp3 file simply
into Audacity with drag&drop (won't work on 2.1.2 due to bug fixed for 2.1.3).

Cheers,
Peter.

Re: No LAME on Mac for Guest and Standard accounts - workaround

Cliff Scott
Good point Peter.

I use iTunes all the time to make MP3 files since iTunes makes the mp3 about 5 - 6 times faster and I use iTunes to keep the files for a time. I don't know why that is, but I can export as an AIFF to "Automatically add to iTunes" which takes about 5 seconds to do for an hour recording. iTunes will then make the mp3 in about 9 seconds. Audacity takes over a minute to do the same thing with the same sample rates etc. Of course there is the extra time to deal with iTunes so overall it may not be a lot faster in total time, but it feels faster anyway.

BTW, I've now upgraded my system to Sierra, but kept the El Cap system on a external HD for testing. Testing jc5 on this new system still shows no issues. Also built the latest Master from Github and it loads without problems even multiple times. Haven't tried Guest or Standard user yet, but I suspect no change there.

Re: No LAME on Mac for Guest and Standard accounts - workaround

In reply to this post by Peter Sampson-2
Hi Peter,

I still cannot reproduce any problem with Guest or Standard user
extracting libmp3lame.dylib from the ZIP file to their own user space
on 10.12.2.

We must get to the bottom of this. No MP3 export for Standard users
would be P1, at least until we understood why - iTunes workarounds
or not. Thousands of users would revert to 2.1.2 otherwise. I think
Mac users are getting tired of installing a new version then finding
some reason to revert.

http://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1570 (P2) only
refers to this being a problem for Guests, which I care less about.
Bug 1570 still has no steps to reproduce and no release note.

So I must still ask for proper steps to reproduce this, specific to
using the ZIP, and starting from no installed Audacity and no
installed LAME.

That said, might a previous installation of LAME in
/usr/local/lib/audacity be the issue, so that Audacity is failing
to over-ride the old path that it can't access? That was not a
problem in recent past, in my testing.

* Are you saying you get a warning that you are not allowed to
extract the zip file? I don't get that as Standard or Guest.

* Have you tested the FFmpeg installer and under what scenarios?
Does it have a problem for Guest or Standard? Is there a problem
with the ZIP of FFmpeg for Guest or Standard?

I have tried the following so far with jc10 and HEAD, no LAME
installed anywhere else.

1 Standard User downloads and installs the DMG of Audacity to their
   own Documents folder.

2 Then they download the ZIP of LAME to their Downloads folder
and extract the ZIP to their Downloads folder. Then do one of
   the following.

2A) Copy libmp3lame.dylib from the extracted folder to their
Documents folder. Launch Audacity. As expected, Audacity
detects LAME immediately, without user browsing for it.
This is equivalent to dropping libmp3lame.dylib into the
Audacity installation folder in 2.1.2 to detect LAME
      automatically.

2B) Or leave libmp3lame.dylib in the subfolder in Downloads
that they extracted to, and browse to it in Audacity's
Libraries Preferences. Audacity then sees the dylib file
if the "All files" or "All dylib files" filter is chosen, and opens
       the file correctly.

3) After 2A) or 2B) I can export an MP3 and import it back
    in correctly.

If I repeat all the steps above for Guest User, LAME works fine.
The only difference is that with HEAD but not jc10, I must give
an admin user name and password to *launch* Audacity. At no
other time in the steps am I asked for credentials.

I have not yet tried what I think is a common scenario of
Standard User downloading and installing Audacity in
/Applications and extracting the ZIP of LAME to their own
space, supplying admin credentials on demand.

I did build HEAD, install it as Admin in /Applications,  then log
in as Guest or Standard and extract LAME to their own user
space. That worked fine. I could try downloading instead of
building for that case.

Re: No LAME on Mac for Guest and Standard accounts - workaround

Peter Sampson-2
  • Go to the external download page
Left-click this link, do not right-click.
  • Directly underneath "For FFmpeg/LAME on Mac click below:", left-click the link "Lame_Library_v3.98.2_for_Audacity_on_OSX.zip" .

  • But on Buanzo's site it has:
For Audacity 1.3.3 or later on Mac OS X 10.4 and greater (Intel or PPC),and Audacity 1.2.5 on OS X 10.4 and later (Intel)
    Lame_Library_v3.98.2_for_Audacity_on_OSX.dmg (ZIP version here)

So the disjuntion and hence the confusion is that the zip version is "hidden"
in the "here" rather than having more explicit display text as given in the
    instructions in the Manual.

This was leading me to be inadvertently clicking on the .dmg - so no wonder
I was failing with requiring admin installation approval.  And if it confuses me
as a ten-year Audacity veteran then it could well confuse others too.  :-//

I would thus request of Buanzo that he change that simple "here" for the
Mac LAME zip download to be more explicit (as it is in the Manual).
ELSE I will modify the Manual so that it tells Mac users to click the "here" for
the zip download - but I would much prefer the latter with a more explicit
    link on Buanzo's site.

In contrast Buanzo's page for LAME and FFmpeg downloads for Windows
    is much clearer.

Related aside:  Is there a reason that on the download page on Buanzo's
site that for FFmpeg we have the zip version given precedence befor the dmg
version?  And note too that the dmg version is "hidden" in a link with non-explicit
display text (unlike on the Windows download page)

BTW testing was done on a Mac totally cleaned of Audacity, LAME and FFmpeg.
Using Guest account with 2.1.2, latest alpha nightly and jc10 - worked fine on
    all three builds.

Apologies for any time-wasting and confusion this may have caused.

    Peter.

with advice about the filter reset in "Where is libmp3lame.dylib"
    http://alphamanual.audacityteam.org/man/Installing_and_updating_Audacity_on_Mac_OS_X#maclame

I also added proper button formatting there.

    Hi Buanzo

    Thanks for the Mac changes.

I would greatly prefer for Windows that the Installer EXE for LAME
is your recommended version, listed above the ZIP,  as I think it
    used to be.

Otherwise we have the problem that some Windows users don't
understand how to extract from ZIP files, and they will probably
have to locate LAME by hand in Libraries Preferences.

With the installer they just have to click a few Next or OK buttons
and LAME is detected automatically by Audacity. Much better for
    your average user.

If you are all OK with having different recommendations per OS, and not an unified recommendation, please let me know. I only need to change some wording and move a block of html.

Let's hear all voices. I will comply.

We had to change for Mac because of our failure to change the LAME
installer for Mac to install in a folder that modern Mac actually supports.

Windows does not have that bug, so on Windows the recommendation
    should remain with the installer.

When we fix the Mac bug, then we can and should go back to all OS'es
    recommending the installer first.

    Clear now?

Windows does not have that bug, so on Windows the recommendation

When we fix the Mac bug, then we can and should go back to all OS'es
    recommending the installer first.

    Clear now?

    That's fine by me Buanzo.

Actually I see if one looks at your entire page then without explanation
it "might" look odd to recommend differently per platform.

But trust me, Windows users getting the ZIP of LAME would create
support issues, for you too since you kindly answer questions about
    LAME and FFmpeg.

In reply to this post by Peter Sampson-2
Just to wrap it up, I also tried in jc10 (Peter I think had not done
    so):

    * Standard User downloads and installs Audacity in
/Applications, supplying admin credentials on demand,
then extracts the ZIP of LAME to their own user space

    * Admin User installs Audacity in /Applications, then Guest
or Standard User logs in and downloads/extracts LAME to
      their own user space.

    http://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1570 is closed
    invalid.

The actual issue of inappropriate location for detection of
DMG-installed LAME is now clarified at
    http://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=290 and promoted
    to P2.

Re: No LAME on Mac for Guest and Standard accounts - workaround

    Peter Sampson-2
Yes I tried on jc10 too, on Guest a/c with an Audacity-clean machine.

As well as latest nightly and 2.1.2

What I haven't tested yet is:
    1) Admin istalls Audacity in Applications folde
    2) Amin installs FFmpeg library
    3) Guest installs LAME on their desktop

But since 1) and 2) worked for Guest before and 3) works now I'm following
the instructions properly - I have every confidence that this will work.

I did write in my message yesterday
    >BTW testing was done on a Mac totally cleaned of Audacity, LAME and FFmpeg.
    >Using Guest account with 2.1.2, latest alpha nightly and jc10 - worked fine on

Looking back at my message from yesterday, it looks as though
somehow the to half of it has gone missing somehow, but obviously
left enough for me to be mostly understood.
