Specious log errors on Windows 10 when closing SessionData project folders

Gale
Administrator
On Win 10 in 2.1.3-alpha (HEAD) running from a folder in my S:\ drive,
I recorded a few seconds, File > Close, File > New, recorded a few
seconds, then File > Close without save and File > Close without save
again.

On the final File > Close but not the first, these errors appeared. I was not
looking at SessionData in Explorer or other tools.

18:08:25: Audacity 2.1.3-alpha-Jan 28 2017
Log Cleared.
18:11:05: Error: File
'C:\Users\Gale\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\project31660\e00\d00'
couldn't be removed (error 5: access is denied.)
18:11:05: Error: File
'C:\Users\Gale\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\project31660\e00'
couldn't be removed (error 5: access is denied.)
18:11:05: Error: File
'C:\Users\Gale\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\project31660'
couldn't be removed (error 5: access is denied.)
18:11:05: Error: File
'C:\Users\Gale\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\project31839\e00\d00'
couldn't be removed (error 5: access is denied.)
18:11:05: Error: File
'C:\Users\Gale\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\project31839\e00'
couldn't be removed (error 5: access is denied.)
18:11:05: Error: File
'C:\Users\Gale\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\project31839'
couldn't be removed (error 5: access is denied.)

The folders were removed, regardless.

In 2.1.2 running from C:\Program Files (x86)\Audacity, the log errors for the
same scenario are briefer:

18:33:36: Error: File
'C:\Users\Gale\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\project3568\e00'
couldn't be removed (error 5: access is denied.)
18:33:36: Error: File
'C:\Users\Gale\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\project3568'
couldn't be removed (error 5: access is denied.)
18:33:36: Error: File
'C:\Users\Gale\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\project3660\e00'
couldn't be removed (error 5: access is denied.)
18:33:36: Error: File
'C:\Users\Gale\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\project3660'
couldn't be removed (error 5: access is denied.)

This error also occurs on Save Project, even if not the final project folder in
SessionData.

Is this a Windows problem or Audacity problem? I am running as user "Gale",
who is an admin. I don't see any bad practical effects from this.

Re: Specious log errors on Windows 10 when closing SessionData project folders

Paul Licameli
Before I changed things, whenever Audacity (tried to) remove a sub-folder, it would do so first as if it were a plain file with wxRemoveFile, then do it again with wxRmdir, and not checking errors.

There are comments from Vaughan dated 2010-07-07 that some peculiarity on Windows XP requires this.  I don't know if it still matters on later versions of Windows.  Surely not, then, as late as Windows 10, where it causes spurious messages.

But this also caused the spurious log messages on Mac (and Linux?).  So I rewrote to avoid those messages, but preserve behavior on Windows.  It seems I did not exactly preserve the Windows behavior.

Does anyone else on Windows see these messages though?  If they do
it probably ought to be a P4 on Bugzilla.
