Warning - Truncating Overlong Block File

Bill Wharrie
So I’m working on images for the Edit Menu: Clip Boundaries page. I did Edit > Clip Boundaries > Join.  I was joining two clips that had 4.46 seconds of white space between them. I got this error message.

Warning - Truncating Overlong Block File
Sequence has block file exceeding maximum 262144 samples per block
Truncating this to maximum length.

I OK this dialog and get another one, which I OK.

When I try to play the selection Audacity stops responding and I have to force quit.

When I re-open Audacity I get an automatic recovery error.

Warning: Problems in Automatic Recover
Project check found file inconsistencies during
automatic recovery.
Select ‘Show Log…” in the Help menu to see details.

The log shows:

11:09:58: Warning: Gap detected in project file.
Start (301787) for block file "e0001202.au" is not one sample past end of previous block (262144).
Moving start so blocks are contiguous.
11:09:58: Warning: Gap detected in project file.
Start (443804) for block file "e00018f3.au" is not one sample past end of previous block (404161).

Start (940864) for block file "e00016ae.au" is not one sample past end of previous block (808322).
Moving start so blocks are contiguous.
11:09:58: Warning: Gap detected in project file. Correcting sequence sample count from 1049913 to 917371.
11:09:58: Warning: Track Audio 1 had error reading clip values from project file.
11:09:58: Warning: Orphan block file: '/Volumes/Audio Disk/Audacity Manual/Edit Menu Clip Boundaries/EditMenuClipBoundaries_data/e00/d01/e0001f5f.au'
11:09:58: Warning:    Project check ignored orphan block file(s). They will be deleted when project is saved.
11:09:58: Warning: Project check found file inconsistencies inspecting the loaded project data.

Just off-hand, I’d say this is bad.

This sounds pretty bad.

Can you reliably reproduce it?

Oops. I can’t. It may have had to do with the project I was opening. I can’t do it by generating tone, splitting, time-shifting then joining. I’ll do some more experiments and report back soon.

Here’s a link to the project that fails.

Select from about 5 to 20 seconds then do Edit > Clip Boundaries > Join.

I can’t reproduce this with any of a half-dozen old projects that I’ve tried, and I can’t reproduce it from scratch.

Sorry for the panic.

This bug really bothers me.

At commit b521fb8422e5ce28b88f99f4ab7670d63e060e61 I have now submitted a change that will detect the problem earlier and abort the editing operation with an exception, which will make one of those "internal error" messages.

If a way to make that error pop up consistently is found, it merits a P1 bug.

I don't understand, are you saying you can reproduce the problem but only in this corrupted project?

Or is this a post-mortem only after the bad project was saved with the truncation?
