a blind newbie and questions

Vojtěch Polášek
Greetings,
my name is Vojtěch Polášek and I am a blind student from Czech Republic.
I have some experience with various audio software like cool edit pro,
soundforge and audacity as well. Now I use Audacity from daily repo on
my Ubuntu 12.04, exact version is:
2.0.5+svn20131223+r8230+29+29+29~ubuntu12.04.1
I would like to ask some questions and suggest some accessibility
improvements.
Firstly, I would like to thank all developers for creating this
wonderful piece of software, I think I can say that this is the most
accessible audio software under Linux with the broadest set of features.
Now my questions:
Audacity sometimes hangs without any reason, is there any debug option
to see what is the problem?
I found a problem: When I try to select part of audio with [ and ]
shortcuts it doesn't work. I have to open Edit menu, yes, this
particular menu, and after I just open and close it, then it works
normally. I can open a bug if you want.
And I would like to suggest two important accessibility improvements:
1. In Windows version of Audacity, there is some kind of indication of
selected track. In Linux when I use Orca screenreader and I am moving
among tracks, I get no feedback. Could this be somehow accomplished?
2. When I want to generate silence, there is no accessible controll for
changing a length of silence. Could you please make this accessible?
the first suggestion is more important, it is crucial to know which
tracks are selected.
thank you very much for your time and feel free to ask me for more
information.

Actually the numbers in the time boxes are editable, but they don't display
like a normal edit box. What would be nice is if I could hit tab to go from
hours to minutes to seconds, as System Access seems to have a few problems
navigating those edit boxes, I have to kind of guess which spot I'm in and
sometimes erase the wrong number. NVDA doesn't seem to have quite so many
problems with that.

Hi Vojta,

Thanks for your message.

Please be aware there is a specialist list for the blind called
audacity4blind in case you did not know:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Audacity_for_blind_users#docs .

More comments below.

If you run Audacity from the terminal there may be a message
that gives some indication of the problem.

Otherwise you would install the audacity-dbg version of the daily
build (or compile a debug build of Audacity yourself), run gdb, then
run Audacity from within gdb.

If it's a hang when playing or recording, pulseaudio or an
inappropriate buffer setting in Audacity Recording Preferences
could be the cause.

Choose the hw device instead of pulse in Devices Preferences,
and/or turn off Software Playthrough in Recording Preferences.

If the hang occurs when editing, is there a set of steps that
makes it likely to happen?

There does not need to be a focused track for [ and ] to work.

I see no problem in Audacity HEAD on Ubuntu 13.10, either when
playing a track or not playing, using an English keyboard layout.

Can you File > Close in Audacity then give steps to reproduce the
problem 1, 2, 3... ?

> I can open a bug if you want.

There is no public access to the Audacity bug tracker. We would
have too many people asking how to record YouTube on Windows.

The best way to report a proven bug is to write to
[hidden email] .

If I change the track selectedness by pressing ENTER, Orca just
says "Return".

If I use UP or DOWN arrow, Orca says nothing.

Is that what you find?

> Could this be somehow accomplished?

The quickest way to accomplish it would be to submit a patch:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/SubmittingPatches .

> 2. When I want to generate silence, there is no accessible controll for
> changing a length of silence. Could you please make this accessible?

Generate has TimeText controls (spinboxes with digits). These
are the same boxes as in Selection Toolbar. Orca doesn't read
any spinboxes for me. Is that what you mean?

To workaround this one, you could install:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Nyquist_Generate_Plug-ins#Variable_Duration_Silence_Generator .

Installation instructions:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Download_Nyquist_Plug-ins#install .

Or use one of the other generators under the divider then CTRL + L
to silence the selection.

Bob,

Doesn't LEFT and RIGHT arrow navigate the digits OK?

TAB really ought to be kept for navigating between controls.

Yes, I do use the arrow keys, but System Access doesn't seem to like them.
Next time I edit something, I'll see if I can figure out what System Access
reads.

For the record, Voiceover on Mac also has problems with those time controls. There is no way to know which value you are modifying with the up/down arrows except to make a change, tab, then shift-tab and listen to the whole thing just to see what changed. Ideally, left/right would move from category to category, and each ("hours", "minutes", and so on) would be spoken as you moved. Up/down would say the new value for the focused category, which also does not happen.

Hmm you might be onto something Alex. I was thinking kind of the same thing
except for tab instead of up and down arrow.

Re: a blind newbie and questions

I agree with Gayle that tab should move from control to control. This way, tabbing to a time selector will read the whole thing and you can arrow around it if you need more granular information. That's just me though.

Re: a blind newbie and questions

Vojtěch Polášek
Hi,
In Linux with Orca I get no feedback when changing time with left and
right arrows.
Could you please react to my other questions, mainly speaking of
selected tracks? Without announcement of selected tracks, it is a real
problem working with Audacity when there are more than two tracks.
Thank you very much,
Vojta

Vojta,

I gave you a detailed response:
http://audacity.238276.n2.nabble.com/a-blind-newbie-and-questions-td7560965.html#a7560971 .

As previously explained this is not a specialised list for the blind.

I am not a knowledgeable Orca user - I just ran Orca from the
terminal. Hence I asked you to confirm whether you experienced
the same symptoms I did.

If you respond then I can add the Orca issues to Audacity bugzilla.

This doesn't mean the issues will be addressed any time soon.
There is only one developer who is likely to be able to improve
matters on Linux and he only occasionally has time free for Audacity.

Re: a blind newbie and questions

Vojtěch Polášek
Oh, I am sorry, I had to miss that message.
Thanks very much for your answer.
I will try to change some settings to see if hanging persists and I will
definitelly check out the list for blind users.
Happy new year,
Vojta
