The current LAME encoder for Audacity is 3.98.2 not 3.8, but the issue of
images and lyrics being discarded is still there and has never been fixed
I'm afraid:

Unless someone provides us with a safe patch to fix it, it's very unlikely
to be fixed before 2.0. It's a problem Audacity has always had and the
priority must be to fix outstanding bugs that are currently blocking
release of 2.0.

I'd agree though this problem is a loss of users' data and that it may be
difficult to recover lost artwork.

Re: image in mp3

Josiah Krutz
In the mean time, you can use a program such as Mp3Tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/) to manually copy the album artwork from the old MP3 into the new MP3.
